Dr. Dugani’s Research Spans COVID-19 Well-Being for Hospitalists and Characterization of Rural-Urban Disparities in Diabetes Care
The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) recently announced the recipients of its 2023 Awards of Excellence, honoring hospitalists who are working towards a bright future in hospital medicine, through innovation, education, and advocacy.
“Hospital medicine continues to grow at a rapid pace, and we need leaders and innovators in the field to ensure that its future remains bright for years to come,” explains Eric E. Howell, MD, MHM, Chief Executive Officer of the Society of Hospital Medicine. “This year’s Awards of Excellence recipients are among those who have risen to the challenge and contributed not only to the advancement of hospital medicine, but to the overall state of healthcare nationwide.”
This year, the recipient of SHM’s Junior Investigator Award, which is presented to early-career hospitalist researchers who are leading the way in their field, is Sagar B. Dugani, MD, PhD, MPH. He is an assistant professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic Rochester, where he also serves as research chair in the Division of Hospital Internal Medicine.
Dr. Dugani served as a consultant to The World Bank in Washington, DC to develop metrics for health systems in low- and middle-income countries. He directs the Hospital Experiences to Advance Goals and Outcomes Network (HEXAGON), a research network for hospital internal medicine across Mayo Clinic sites in Minnesota, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Florida. Through HEXAGON, he leads the longitudinal COVID-19 well-being survey for hospitalists. Dr. Dugani also led the Post-Discharge Early Assessment with Remote video Link (PEARL) randomized clinical trial to improve post-discharge outcomes and serves as Principal Investigator of Hospital Internal Medicine Patient Reported Outcomes Versus Experiences (Hospital IMPROVE) to improve the experience of hospitalized patients.
Through a career development award from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, he leads the Rural Patient Risks and Exposures for Diabetes Control Study to characterize rural-urban disparities in diabetes care and improve risk prediction for diabetes in the Midwest United States. Dr. Dugani is a Fellow in Hospital Medicine and a member of the SHM Research Committee and the Patient Experience and Rural Hospitalist Special Interest Groups.
Awards of Excellence winners were recognized at SHM’s annual conference, SHM Converge, held from March 26-29, 2023, in Austin, TX. For more information on SHM’s Awards of Excellence, visit hospitalmedicine.org/awards.
