Dr. Pinzon Engages With Hispanic Community, Serves as Spokesperson for COVID-19 Safety and Vaccine Education

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) recently announced the recipients of its 2022 Awards of Excellence, honoring hospitalists who exemplify hospital medicine best practices in areas such as clinical leadership, teaching, teamwork, research, and humanitarian services, among others.

“Hospitalists have always been known as innovators in medicine and contribute to improving patient care at their institutions in unique ways,” explains Eric E. Howell, MD, MHM, Chief Executive Officer of SHM. “This year’s Awards of Excellence winners exemplify what it means to be leaders in the field and showcase the many ways that hospitalists are positively impacting the future of healthcare.”

Ingrid Pinzon, MD, CHCQM-PHYADV, FHM, is this year’s recipient in the “Excellence in Humanitarian Services” category. Dr. Pinzon graduated from medical school from National University of Colombia in 1998 and practiced medicine in Colombia until 2006, when she moved to the U.S. She completed her training in Internal Medicine at Morehouse School of Medicine in 2014 and is currently a hospitalist and the medical director of care coordination at Emory Johns Creek Hospital. Throughout her career, she has been consistent with a meaningful community engagement, with a focus on underserved Hispanic communities and those who are hesitant to engage with the healthcare system.

She has partnered with the Atlanta Latin American Association, working directly to provide education about COVID-19 to the Hispanic population, including Facebook live educational sessions and food drive education. Her reputation and air of authoritative kindness has resulted in multiple interviews for COVID-19 safety and vaccination community education in both English and Spanish media, including Univision, Fox 5 News, and Telemundo. In collaboration with the Gwinnett Public Library system, she has presented and recorded culturally competent Spanish-language diabetes and COVID-19 information presentations that are aired on YouTube.

Dr. Pinzon has been a member of the Society of Hospital Medicine since 2015 and currently is on the leadership team of the Atlanta Chapter.

Awards of Excellence winners were recognized at SHM’s annual conference, SHM Converge, which was held from April 7-10, 2022, in Nashville, TN. For more information on SHM’s Awards of Excellence, visit https://hospitalmedicine.org/awards.
