The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) recently announced the recipients of its 2023 Awards of Excellence, honoring hospitalists who are working towards a bright future in hospital medicine, through innovation, education, and advocacy.
“Hospital medicine continues to grow at a rapid pace, and we need leaders and innovators in the field to ensure that its future remains bright for years to come,” explains Eric E. Howell, MD, MHM, Chief Executive Officer of the Society of Hospital Medicine. “This year’s Awards of Excellence recipients are among those who have risen to the challenge and contributed not only to the advancement of hospital medicine, but to the overall state of healthcare nationwide.”
Ilan Alhadeff, MD, MBA, SFHM, CLHM, and his wife, Mrs. Lori Alhadeff, are this year’s recipients in the “Excellence in Humanitarian Service” category. Dr. and Mrs. Alhadeff are the co-founders of Make Our Schools Safe, a non-profit foundation formed after their daughter’s tragic death in the 2018 Parkland School shooting, with a mission to protect students and teachers at school. Under their leadership, the foundation has helped pass Alyssa’s Law, the mobile panic alert law named after their daughter, in three states, has disbursed over $200,000 for various school safety projects, and has formed 20 high school safety clubs across five states.
Dr. Alhadeff is a practicing hospitalist and board-certified physician executive who currently serves as the AVP of Medical Services and Care Management at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. He also works as a Physician Advisor and is Affiliate Faculty for Florida Atlantic University. He regularly lectures on leading through tragedy and post-traumatic growth. He is a Senior Fellow in Hospital Medicine, holds a Certificate of Leadership in Hospital Medicine, and has served as an SHM Leadership Academy facilitator since 2013.
Originally a health and physical education teacher and a three-sport coach, Lori took time off to raise her three children. Following the tragedy, Lori was elected to the School Board of Broward County. Four years later, Lori now sits as the Chair of the Board of the sixth-largest school district in the country, driving safety and high-quality education in her county’s schools.
Awards of Excellence winners were recognized at SHM’s annual conference, SHM Converge, held from March 26-29, 2023, in Austin, TX. For more information on SHM’s Awards of Excellence, visit hospitalmedicine.org/awards.
