Dr. Kartha Established Hospital Medicine Team at Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar, Founded SHM Middle East Chapter
The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) recently announced the recipients of its 2023 Awards of Excellence, honoring hospitalists who are advancing hospital medicine through innovation, education, and advocacy.
“Hospital medicine continues to grow at a rapid pace, and we need leaders and innovators in the field to ensure that its future remains bright for years to come,” explains Eric E. Howell, MD, MHM, Chief Executive Officer of the Society of Hospital Medicine. “This year’s Awards of Excellence recipients are among those who have risen to the challenge and contributed not only to the advancement of hospital medicine, but to the overall state of healthcare nationwide.”
This year, the recipient of SHM’s Outstanding Service in Hospital Medicine Award is Dr. Anand Kartha. He is head of hospital medicine at Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar and associate professor of clinical medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine. He is a hospitalist and a Senior Fellow in Hospital Medicine whose work and leadership has significantly impacted the field, with particular emphasis on veterans’ healthcare and international hospital medicine.
As Associate Chief for Quality at VA Boston, Dr. Kartha helped establish the VACO Hospitalist Field Advisory Committee, the SHM VA Hospitalist Special Interest Group and the Boston Association of Academic Hospital Medicine Chapter of SHM. He established the hospital medicine team at Hamad Medical Corporation, a world-class, academic system providing 90% of Qatar’s acute care, where he also implemented multiple programs that significantly improved the entire patient journey.
Dr. Kartha's work was instrumental to the success of COVID-19 response and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He founded the SHM Middle East Chapter and promoted international membership to grow SHM’s global footprint.
Dr. Kartha is also an inpatient education leader. He has actively published internationally and serves on the editorial boards of several peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, he has received multiple awards, including the David Littman Award and Qatar Stars of Excellence Awards.
