The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) recently named four new Masters in Hospital Medicine (MHM) to honor those who have demonstrated a longstanding commitment to the principles of leadership, teamwork, and quality improvement within the specialty of hospital medicine. Alpesh N. Amin, MD, MBA, MACP, MHM, has been elected a Master in Hospital Medicine in recognition of his dedication to the specialty, the Society of Hospital Medicine, and the research and transformative models of care that advance the field.
“This year’s Masters in Hospital Medicine embody what it means to be a leader in the field and reflect the multitude of ways in which hospitalists positively impact patient care,” says Eric E. Howell, MD, MHM, Chief Executive Officer of the Society of Hospital Medicine. “Their dedication and innovation have helped to trailblaze a path for thousands of other hospitalists, guiding and empowering them to achieve the very best for their hospitals, their patients, and their communities.”
Dr. Amin completed his internal medicine residency at University of California, Irvine, where he also served as chief resident in internal medicine. Following residency, he also earned his Healthcare MBA from the university. Dr. Amin then joined the faculty at UC Irvine and rose through the ranks quickly. He is currently Professor of Medicine at the UC Irvine School of Medicine and Founder and Executive Director of the Hospital Medicine Program at UC Irvine Healthcare. Dr. Amin was the first hospitalist to be Chair of Medicine.
He has been a champion for hospital medicine research in many high-impact publications, with more than 280 peer-reviewed publications and numerous books relevant to hospitalist practice, including anticoagulation, VTE, and more.
Dr. Amin has been active with SHM since its early days, serving on the Board of Directors from 2005 to 2009, and helping to create and co-author the Core Competencies curriculum that defines the skillset for hospitalists. He was an inaugural member of the National Association of Inpatient Physicians (NAIP), now known as SHM. Dr. Amin has played an important role in multiple SHM committees and served as the Annual Conference Course Director in 2006. He was also a key contributor to numerous QI tools generated by SHM, including Glycemic Control and VTE Prevention.
