$25,000 Scholarships To Be Awarded to Third-Year Medical Students From an Underrepresented Group in Medicine
Today, the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) proudly announces its Hospital Medicine Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Scholarship Fund, made possible by keystone sponsor, Vituity. Medical education assistance scholarships in the amount of $25,000 will be distributed to third-year medical students from an underrepresented group in medicine with an interest in a career in hospital medicine and a commitment to practicing in an underserved community.
“SHM is committed to enhancing diversity in the hospitalist workforce and eliminating health disparities for hospitalized patients across the country,” says Eric E. Howell, MD, MHM, CEO of SHM. “We believe this scholarship fund will support vital efforts that augment opportunities for underrepresented groups in medicine to join the hospital medicine physician community.”
Students may self-nominate and apply, or a medical school may nominate one student per year for this award. Criteria for participation include:
- Applicants must be a student underrepresented in medicine who demonstrates academic excellence and is in good academic standing in their program of study
- A curriculum vitae (CV) for the nominee, which includes awards, scholarships, and scholastic achievements
- A personal statement by the nominee articulating their leadership efforts and/or engagement efforts in projects or initiatives addressing health disparities and/or the healthcare of racial and ethnic minorities, specific accomplishments or achievements while in medical school, and a summary of the applicant’s plan to pursue a career in hospital medicine and in an underserved community of color
- One letter of recommendation from a faculty member
“This is a critical opportunity to help build a diverse workforce of physicians who will willingly practice in underserved communities, given the projection of a significant need for physicians in these communities,” explains Jenna Goldstein, SHM Chief of Strategic Partnerships. “We also recognize that supporting these objectives can contribute to improving outcomes for hospitalized patients in many communities across the country, which directly aligns with SHM’s mission.”
Applications must be submitted by March 16, 2022, at 5 p.m. ET. Scholarship recipients will be announced and recognized at SHM’s national conference, SHM Converge 2022, in Nashville, Tennessee on April 9, 2022.
