Henry Ford’s Changemakers Fellow Committed to Serving Underrepresented Communities is This Year’s Recipient of Scholarship Fund

Today, the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) proudly announces Cedric Mutebi, a medical student at Wayne State University School of Medicine, as the recipient of its Hospital Medicine Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Scholarship Fund, made possible by keystone sponsor, Vituity. Mutebi will receive a medical education assistance scholarship in the amount of $25,000.

“Cedric’s commitment to community, medicine and improving disparities of care are a great embodiment of the spirit of the SHM Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Hospital Medicine Scholarship award,” explains Jenna Goldstein, Chief of Staff at SHM and staff liaison for SHM’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. “We look forward to presenting Cedric this scholarship award as he continues to pursue his medical career and contributes to improving care for underserved communities.”

Cedric Mutebi is a proud native of Detroit and a first-generation Ugandan American passionate about promoting health equity and reducing racial inequities in healthcare locally and abroad. Since beginning medical school, Cedric has been active in transforming medical education at his university and providing care in his community. Most notably, he serves as one of the student leads and co-developers of the Healing Between in the Lines program, which aims to teach the intersection of structural racism and medicine while amplifying grassroot-level advocacy.

As Henry Ford’s Changemakers Fellow, Cedric has also co-developed and leads the Readying Youth Scientists for Excellence in Medicine, Health Equity, and Discovery (RYSE MED) program – an immersive experience for high school students from underrepresented in medicine backgrounds interested in pursuing clinical or research careers.

“Cedric has an impressive background and is already a health equity leader in his community,” says Javay Walton, Vituity’s Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. “Cedric’s lifelong passion for reducing healthcare inequities and his demonstrated actions towards this just cause is exemplary, and the future state of our healthcare system will be better thanks to his considerable efforts.”

Cedric's clinical work, community activism, and research have received local and national recognition. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2019 Pax Christi Young Peacemaker Award, the 2019 The Atlantic magazine Rising Star Award, and the 2022 Online MedEd Future Black Physicians National Awardee.

“I entered medicine to advance the health of my community, and this scholarship will help create more opportunities for me to develop as a future physician and serve the most marginalized communities in healthcare,” notes Mutebi. “If we are truly committed to the health of our nation, we must challenge the structural barriers across the medical continuum that oppose that mission and recenter our healthcare workforce development around the principles of justice, equity, dignity, and compassion.”

The scholarship fund will be presented at SHM’s annual conference, SHM Converge, in Austin on March 27.
