Longtime SHM Member and Graduate Medical Education Leader Daniel I. Steinberg, MD, SFHM, FACP Receives 2021 ACGME Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award

Prestigious Award Presented to Ten Exemplary Program Directors in Graduate Medical Education

On Tuesday, November 10, Daniel I. Steinberg, MD, SFHM, FACP was one of ten graduate medical education program directors from across the United States to receive the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) 2021 Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award. This award “recognizes program directors who have fostered innovation and improvement in their residency/fellowship programs and served as exemplary role models for residents and fellows” and is considered the most prestigious award in the field. Dr. Steinberg has been a respected member of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) since 2003 and has continuously contributed to the success of SHM and the evolution of the hospital medicine specialty.

“I am humbled to be recognized among such leaders in graduate medical education,” notes Dr. Steinberg. “It is a true honor to represent hospital medicine and hospitalists in such a positive way and to demonstrate the role they play in developing healthcare’s future leaders.”

As a member of SHM, Dr. Steinberg has served on the Education, Physicians-in-Training, and Annual Conference Committees. Dr. Steinberg has also been heavily involved with SHM’s Annual Conference since its inception in multiple capacities. He has served as a judge for the scientific abstract competition, has presented twelve sessions, and is currently the Course Director for SHM Converge, SHM’s 2021 Annual Conference, which will be held virtually from May 3-7. Dr. Steinberg relied on his years of expertise in hospital medicine, including clinical practice, quality improvement, and leadership, among others, to create the course schedule.

Dr. Steinberg served as the program director for the Internal Medicine residency at Mount Sinai Beth Israel for 11 years, from 2009 to 2020. In September 2020, he transitioned to new leadership roles in the Mount Sinai Health System. Along with his new post as Associate Dean for Quality and Patient Safety in Graduate Medical Education for the Mount Sinai Health System, Dr. Steinberg serves as the Chief Patient Safety Officer of Mount Sinai Downtown, which includes Mount Sinai Beth Israel, the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai and multiple ambulatory facilities across lower Manhattan. He is Professor of Medicine and Professor of Medical Education at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Dr. Steinberg completed his residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center, also in New York City.
