Welcome to SHM!

In the last few years, the Canadian Society of Hospital Medicine (CSHM) has been supported by the expertise and assistance of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), headquartered in the United States.

SHM is a large organization with international reach, rooted in more than 20 years of experience serving hospital medicine professionals and those who support them.

Leaders from both organizations have had multiple discussions at the local, national and provincial levels and have agreed that merging both organizations would provide a solid path forward to advocate for and support those providing care for hospitalized patients in Canada.

What does this mean for the Canadian society and its members?

The Canadian society will now be the Canadian International Chapter of SHM. The current CSHM executive board will now be the executive board of the chapter.

CSHM members who have had paid membership in the last year will be offered a free one-year SHM membership from the fall of 2019 to the fall of 2020 (a 445 U.S. dollar value), providing them with:

• Live and online education on the SHM Learning Portal and SHM Education app, featuring the Question of the Day.
• Professional development opportunities and a network of fellow hospital medicine professionals in Canada, the United States and around the globe.
• Access to SHM’s monthly newsmagazine, The Hospitalist, and its peer-reviewed journal, the Journal of Hospital Medicine.
• Resources in quality improvement, practice management, advocacy and more.
• Online support and discussion exclusively for members via an online community.

For those who have been long-term members of CSHM, SHM will offer additional opportunities for recognition.

• Those who have had paid CSHM memberships for the last three years and have contributed the practice of hospital medicine at the regional, provincial or national levels will be eligible to apply for SHM’s Fellow in Hospital Medicine designation.
• Individuals who have been CSHM members for more than five years and work in significant leadership positions will have the opportunity to apply for SHM's elite Senior Fellow in Hospital Medicine designation.

What do I have to do to next?

If you're already an SHM member, there's not much else you have to do. Just check out the Canada Chapter community on SHM's online community to start networking with fellow Canadian hospitalists! Also, make sure your profile is up-to-date by logging in to your account. This will ensure you receive copies of our publications and information specific to your areas of interest. 

If you're new to SHM, we have created a member account for you. Login and reset your password to set up your new account. Your username will be your email address that you have associated with your CSHM account. Fill out your SHM member profile, including mailing address, to ensure you receive copies of our publications and information specific to your areas of interest.

Whether you're new to SHM or have been a member in the past, make sure to explore the benefits to maximize your membership.
